A Day at the Badger Bunny Farm

We are bunny nuts at our house! Becki and Jesse have moved into our dining room now that they have sold their house and are looking for a property up north, so all their rabbits are here. Abri moved her meat and pet rabbits here. Our top count was 32 head of rabbits in our fluffle! After a series of spring rains, we finally had lovely weather and got busy with bunny chores, which we are going to share with you!
We moved Launchie, a young buck, who lives in lonely solitude because he behaves rudely, into a smaller cage so his big cage could be used for a honeymoon suite. I got distracted before giving him water and didn’t close the cage properly and he went running! Grizzly, our Great Pyrenees dog (he’s with his brother Kodiak), chased him down and caught him. He never breaks the skin. He’s such a dear and saves us heaps of time when the bunnies get out. He’s even brought us a wild baby bunny completely unharmed, just soaked to the skin.
Snow, our tiny stud muffin, has been put in with a young doe, “L”. She was named “L” because Mimi wanted her named Lira and Anna wanted her named Leo. I found the common ground. Our fleece rabbits are Jersey Woolies, a rare cross between Netherland Dwarfs, the smallest rabbits there are, and French Angoras, who have an amazing fur.
A pet: Xena, Warrior Dude (Abri and Matt thought this little Lion Head was a girl).
Carrot, a cross between a Silver Fox and a Rex, escaped his litter’s cull and became a pet. If they are too big when you slaughter them, they are tough as boots, apparently. He was the Day Bunny this day.
More pets. Panda is a legitimate Netherland Dwarf. He is bonding with Sugarplum, a gray Jersey Wooly. Someone didn’t latch the hutch properly and at 2:00 am they were out! Sweet little Panda let me just pick him up. Sugarplum wanted to be with him and kept running around the hutch, but Steve had to release the hound (Grizzly) to catch her. Grizzly can always tell when they are a flight risk and won’t put them down. I had to release her from his grip. Soggy, of course.
This is Fuzzy. Apparently, he is molting, because this is not the way a Wooly is supposed to look! But he is very sweet.
Abri has been taking bunnies to freezer camp. We’re down to 26 in the fluffle.
As a yarn spinner, I love my little fiber herd, or should I say, fleece fluffle! I comb the down out once a week. One week I do the whites, the next I do the grays. Whatever I knit up eventually looks as fluffy as they do!
